Sugar plant explosion
 

Around 7:15 p.m. Thursday, February 7, 2008, sugar dust ignited, and there was an explosion and fire at the Imperial Sugar Dixie Crystals plant in Chatham County - near Port Wentworth off Hwy 25.

Eight bodies were recovered from plant. Five people have died at the Doctor's Hospital burn center in Augusta. 6 burn victims are still being treated there, and 4 are now being treated at the Doctor's Hospital Rehab Unit. More than 40 people were injured in the incident.
