Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine says he was misinformed when he told national and local television reporters, including Savannah's WSAV, that 6 victims had been found in the remains of the Imperial Sugar Refinery in Port Wentworth.

While local Savannah Chatham Metro Police Spokesman Mike Wilson was denying that any bodies had been found, Oxendine told reporters just before noon that three bodies had been found in tunnels under the plant and that three more had been located but not recovered.

A spokesman for the Commissioner now says he was misinformed and that the two reports he received were about the same three victims.

Wilson chided the media for reporting the Commissioner’s statements. Oxendine is the state’s top elected insurance and fire official and is responsible for much of the state’s response to large fire scenes.
