Obesity rates in children and adolescents have tripled in the past 20 years.
Many children aren't as active any more. Instead, they're in front of the computer, TV or playing video games.
One personal trainer decided to take action in the battle of the bulge. Derek Frazier, owner of You Need Fitness is sponsoring a kids fitness challenge essay contest.
News 3's Randi Hempel takes us to a training session with one lucky winner.
“All the way down if you can alright good.” Personal Trainer, Derek Frazier encourages Kyle Warnock.
This is Kyle Warnock's first training session with coach Derek Frazier.
The exercise is something Kyle knows he needs. He was an active child, involved in sports, but then he took a year off.
“I got more comfortable without having sports and it kept going from one year, two years, three years, 4 years and then I just completely quit. So, I put on more weight and so I had kids picking on me.” Kyle explains the decline in activity.
He's working to shed the pounds for free.
“As a fitness professional, I feel like it's my duty to give back to the community and this is the best way to do it right now.” Explains Frazier.
The kids won't just get one or two free sessions. They'll get 12-30 minute sessions as a group, Then, each of the teens will meet with Derek on a one on one basis for a total of 24 sessions That's not all though. The families will also meet on a weekly basis.
“Parents are actually going to be required to be there and they're going to be required to take ah the advice that I give them especially for what they buy for their children for food.” Derek details the plan.
Kyle's mom, Mary, is on board.
“The results are endless really.” Derek talks to Kyle and Mary.
And Kyle's determined to see results
“Feel better. My self esteem is pretty low right now and I'm just sick of it. I'm ready to get it off.” Says Kyle.
“And you can do it, you know that right?” I add.
“Oh, I know I can do it, definitely.” He finishes.
The sky is the limit.
