Healthier Options In the School Cafeteria

Rising childhood obesity rates are prompting school district officials to take action.  A few weeks ago, we told you how Savannah-Chatham County Schools superintendent, Dr. Thomas Lockamy, is mandating that all students have 30 minutes of activity each day.
3 On Your Side Education Reporter, Randi Hempel, shows us what the Savannah-Chatham School District is doing to combat obesity in the cafeteria.
 
“Ham, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli…” Islands Elementary 2nd Grader, Canaan DuBose lists what’s in her salad.
 
Islands Elementary second grader, Canaan DuBose, is going with the healthy options at lunch.
 
“I like to eat healthy because it's good for you.” adds Canaan.
 
And she's not the only one munching on her veggies. Bathsheba McPherson's tray is full of the good stuff too.  
 
“The broccoli and the corn." 2nd grader, Bathsheba McPherson lists her favorites.
 
The school district also changed other foods for healthier choices on the line.
 
“White rice to brown rice.  We went to a wheat pancake. We went to a wheat waffle. We went from white bread to wheat bread and also we don't serve the ravioli anymore because it's high in sodium.” Explains Gina Campbell, Islands Elementary’s assistant cafeteria manager.
 
What they do have is low in salt, sugar and fat.
 
There are several different milk choices; fat free skim, 1%, soy and lactaid. We don't see the chocolate milk or vanilla milk here like we used to have. Chocolate milk is only served on Thursdays and vanilla on Tuesdays. They're both reduced fat and reduced sugar.
 
These second graders know just how important it is to get their greens.
 
“It's healthier for you to eat salad because you can run much more faster and you have more energy.” Adds Canaan.
 
"Healthy stuff will make you stronger.”
