Fuel: SCCPSS Needs More Money for Transportation

You've surely felt the pinch of rising prices at the pump lately, up about 30 cents in the last month. Yet you aren't alone, local schools are feeling the pain too.
The Savannah-Chatham school district estimated that it would cost nearly $2 million for fuel. Today, the chief financial officer requested more money. The school board voted to move $1 million from their fund balance to the fuel fund. That's a 50% increase!
“We've kind of anticipated it throughout the year, but we've gotten to the point where we've had to do that transfer and will continue to add that money to next year's budget, another million dollars to fuel just to keep up with the rising cost.” Says Otis Brock, Chief Communications Officer for Savannah-Chatham Schools.
Since the system is a government agency, they don't have to pay as much, a little bit over three dollars per gallon of diesel with delivery included, but that's still a lot.
Under the recommended budget, transportation will see additional cuts, no new buses next year and the reduction of transportation for specialty programs and alternative sites. (That will still be voted on with the budget.)
