Four suspects have been identified in one of the fights at Savannah High School yesterday afternoon – one 16, one 17 and two 18-year-olds.

Campus police say they haven't made arrests yet and more suspects could be identified.

There was a rearranging of the schedule for tonight's basketball games at the school. The JV games were canceled, and the varsity games were moved up -- the girls to 4:00 and the boys to 5:30.

It comes a day after two separate fights at the school, one right outside the gym. Shards of glass and small streams of blood were what was left behind after the suspects slammed the victim's head into the trophy case.

News 3’s Randi Hempel asked Chief Bryant if this was the reason the games were rescheduled.

"Well, I wouldn't say so much that it was in regards to the fight. … I would like to air on the side of caution rather than to point to any one specific reason why,” says Chief Ulysses Bryant of Campus Police, SCCPSS.

Chief Bryant tells me the decision demonstrates good judgment for the welfare of both the players and those attending the game.

Safety Measures

Chief Bryant says yesterday’s fights are not the norm.

“I would like to feel that most of our students come to school prepared to do what's expected of them, but we have that small percentage that takes up a great deal of time and puts us all at risk unnecessarily.”

So, security was beefed up Friday - by both campus and metro police.

“Safety is a top concern at all of the schools in the district,” says Chief Bryant.

Randi Hempel asks, “What steps are being taken to ensure safety of not only students but employees and parents coming and going from all of the schools?”

Chief Bryant replies, “You know, that's a very good question and as you know we've got several initiatives that address school safety. We've got the random administrative inspections, … we've got the safe school drug and weapons sweeps, we've got amnesty boxes, we've got a code of conduct that every student and every parent or guardian should be familiar with.”

Bryant says they can put up all the metal detectors, cameras and fences they want to, but if someone is determined to misbehave, they will.
