It's been almost a year since Chatham County voters approved a special one-penny sales tax for education. Education Reporter, Randi Hempel, just returning from today's school board meeting and has an update on where all that E-SPLOST money is expected to be spent

So far, more than $28.9 million dollars have been collected. Today, the school board approved the contract for a project management team.

“Getting that approve today is a big step towards getting some dirt moving ah and getting some schools built in this community that we desperately need doing land studies for the land out by Godley Station for those schools.” Says Otis Brock, the district’s Chief Operations Officer.

The land studies will look at possible wet land and also give footprint options for the schools that will be built on the sites.

The board was also updated on school security. The district is looking at a system wide camera system for the secondary schools. That will allow outside agencies like police departments to view what's going on in the schools.

The fencing has been broken into smaller projects with White Bluff, Windsor Forest and Spencer Elementary schools being first on the list.

In addition to receiving an ESPLOST update today, the Savannah-Chatham Co. Public Schools board voted to appove a parent notification system.

The system will allow district officials to contact parents the same day a child is absent from school - and not just on the phone, but via email and text messaging as well.

School board President Joe Buck says this new system is very important in light of the tragedy at Virginia Tech.

The parent notification system is set to be up and running by the end of October.
