First Student is making sure their buses are safer this school year. 3 On Your Side Education Reporter, Randi Hempel takes a look at what they've got in store.
When buses are off and empty, they need to be protected. That's why First Student turned to Theft Mate.
"Once the vehicle is secured at the end of the day that if anyone tries to vandalize the bus, get up on the bus, mess with the fire extinguisher things like that, it's got a motion sensor that'll set, set off the alarm.? Says Randy Samples, First Student?s contract manager here in Chatham County.
We step onto the bus to see just how it works. Within seconds, the motion sensor begins blinking, lights flashing and then there?s the loud horn.
"It's going to be we feel extremely effective for the fact that the horn going off and the lights blinking will get people's attention will have the person who's trying to vandalize the bus will run away from the vehicle at that point.? Adds Samples.
Randy Samples, First Student's contract manager here in Chatham County hopes that they can rely on the public to call the police if the alarm goes off on buses.
Theft Mate isn't the only new feature. After each run, drivers have an extra step; Child Check Mate.
?We look in our seats and we check for children after we have done that we come here to this button, we push this button once we hear the buzzer go off. That means we have checked for no sleeping children on the bus.? Explains driver Noviah
