It's an 11th hour hearing, and with Troy Davis' life on the line, the state's Pardons and Parole board room was packed this morning. Davis' family was in attendance along with witnesses who implicated him at his trial and have since recanted or contradicted their testimonies.
They made their case to spare Davis' life. It took nearly six hours - we're told these hearings usually take only about an hour and a half.
Family members of Mark Macphail, along with prosecutors and police who built a case against Davis in 1991 are now presenting their arguments to deny clemency. In the past, they've said they stand by the jury's verdict and punishment. It's expected that the board will make their decision today.
The Pardon and Parole Board's decision will end 16 years of appeals in the murder case. Whichever way the board decides, it won't change a Chatham County jury's guilty verdict in 1991. The five-member board has three options: they can grant clemency, deny clemency or take 90 days to review the case. Davis is set to die by lethal injection Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Davis' family was going to speak with us, but changed their minds. They're now visiting with Davis at the state facility in Jackson.
