Troy Davis has been behind bars since 1989, when he was arrested for the murder of Officer Mark MacPhail. He's been in prison longer than many of the Savannah teenagers who came out to support him Saturday night have been alive.
The teens sat quietly in the back of Sacred Heart Church on Bull Street until they were called to the front of the sanctuary. Each wore a shirt reading, "I am Troy Davis." They say they believe if Davis is executed, the state will be killing an innocent man.
Friends and members of human rights groups filled the rest of the pews. "We are bringing people together to stand by Troy Davis and his family and to pray for justice to be done," said Aleta Toure of the Interracial Interfaith Community. "We are concerned that the new evidence in his case has not been heard and we hope that the tragedy of murder not be compounded by the tragedy of a wrongful exectution."
Davis family members are in Atlanta, preparing for Monday's clemency hearing.
