It's estimated at least 95% of homes have at least one smoke detector. Credited with saving lives, some now say the type of smoke detector hanging in most homes may not be saving as many lives as once thought.

Smoke detectors

Where should you place smoke detectors:

- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home

- Install one outside every separate sleeping area, new homes should have one inside every sleeping room

- Don’t install them near windows, doors, or ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation

Smoke Detector Safety Tips:

- Test your smoke alarms once a month

- Replace the batteries in your smoke alarm once a year

- Never “borrow” a battery from a smoke alarm

- Don’t disable smoke alarms even temporarily

National Fire Professionals Association statement on smoke detectors:

Ionization smoke detection is generally more responsive to flaming fires and photoelectric smoke detection is generally more responsive to smoldering fires.

Both types of technologies have improved home fire safety. NFPA recommends both types of detection be installed in homes
