In a 3 On Your Side follow up:
More than a month after a SCAD student fell from a dorm, a City investigation into what went wrong moves forward.
18-year-old Megan Petry was leaning on a fifth-floor railing at the Turner House when it gave way March 23rd. Inspectors hoped to finish their investigation within a few days, But have been waiting for information about the rail's load-bearing ability. The city gave SCAD until May 9th to provide that information.
NEWS 3 has learned SCAD handed over some specs they received from the manufacturer and the architect this week. But both the school and the City are still waiting for the rail system's load-bearing capablities.
"Some spec info is in," City of Savannah Spokesperson Bret Bell says. "We're satisfied they're making progress," he adds.
After that failure in March, SCAD put reinforcements on the Turner House railings.
The City also wanted those alterations to be tested.
This week, SCAD sent a letter to the City, saying the school has "engaged engineers to test the existing railing system against applicable code standards...and will continue to fully cooperate with the city in its review."
We're told those load tests are being performed today or Monday to ensure the rails are safe.
Megan Petry remains at Memorial University Medical Center in fair condition.
