Lack of Water Cited in Deaths of 9 SC Firefighters
Friday, May 09, 2008 - 10:51 AM
A federal report on a furniture store blaze that killed nine Charleston firefighters almost a year ago says crews never had enough water.
The draft report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health says firefighters didn't have enough hoses or adequate water pressure to fight the blaze last June.
The draft details what happened to the firefighters, including how two of them found a pair of comrades in the smoke-filled showroom and then lost contact.
The report says firefighters didn't have enough hoses and the problem was complicated as passing cars ran over them. It says larger hoses weren't used until 20 minutes after the fire engulfed the showroom.
