New St. Pat's post-parade traffic plan
Wednesday, Mar 12, 2008 - 04:45 PM
The City of Savannah will implement a new post-St. Patrick's Day Parade traffic-dispersement plan for the first time this year.
In an effort to ease gridlock, City Traffic Engineering and Metro Police Traffic Patrol have devised a traffic plan that directs vehicles to certain major routes depending upon where in the Historic District you park. A series of signs and traffic control points will direct parade-goers out of downtown, easing demand on certain routes while funneling cars as quickly as possible out of the Historic District.
As part of the plan, cars parked east of Bull Street will be sent east and south, and cars parked west of Bull Street will be directed west and south. Also, throughout the Festival, trucks will be routed around the Historic District.
To ease congestion, cars will not be allowed to cross Bull Street downtown immediately after the end of the St. Patrick's Day parade.
If you're parked east of Bull Street and need to head west: drive south on Price, west on 37th Street to I-16 on-ramp; OR take President Street or Wheaton Street to the Truman Parkway, take the DeRenne Ave. exit to I-516.
If you're parked west of Bull Street and need to head east: take I-16 or I-516 to DeRenne Avenue to the Truman Parkway; OR take Whitaker Street to Victory Drive.
Below are the routes out of downtown, lined in red, with the parade route in purple:
