We go from the Verizon Heritage to another great sporting event right in our back yards.
The Tour de Georgia, the country's premier bike racing event, completed its first stage from Tybee Island to Savannah today.
News 3's Randi Hempel was on Tybee for the start of the 70-mile trek today and brings you the sights and sounds.
This is the first time the Tour de Georgia started on Tybee Island. Riders and residents couldn't be happier.
“It's a great event. I'm from South Carolina, so it's really close to home and my family gets to come watch and it's only one of a few races I get to do in the U.S.," says five-time Tour de Georgia rider from team High Road, Craig Lewis.
“We follow the Tour de Georgia, we follow a lot of cycling races and it's just so nice to have this in your own back yard 5048 to promote cycling in the community and all over Georgia,” says Savannah resident, Jeannie Cohn.
Jeannie Cohn is marking the memory with an autographed jersey for her son.
The race is also bringing families together. Tybee local Bill Cannon and his son, Eric, are big biking fans, so Eric came from Jacksonville to watch the tour start here.
“Unless you're over in Europe where it's big, you don't really get to see it, so this was close enough to home to make the trip,” says spectator Eric Cannon.
Young fans enjoy it, too.
“It's really cool to see all of these people go around racing,” says 8-year-old Jameson Burke.
Having the Atlantic as the back drop is something local leaders sold race organizers on.
“We're trying to roll out the red carpet so they'll come back cause this has such a positive impact on us,” says Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman.
“I think it's a real milestone for Tybee and it couldn't be better for Tybee in terms of visualization and the new Strand project all coming together at the same time,” says spectator Bill Cannon.
Giving spectators and riders a memory to hold on to forever.
The Tour de Georgia continues tomorrow, with stage two from Statesboro to Augusta. The race wraps up in Atlanta on Sunday.
