    After a man drowned in Johnson Creek, between Harbor Island and Hunting Island, first responders are sending a message to swimmers and beachgoers. A family of four from Swannanoa, N.C., ventured out to the sandbar in Johnson Creek on Tuesday. Strong currents took Matthew Auten, 50, downstream near the bridge where he drowned. Now, the firefighter who discovered Auten’s body is warning swimmers against going to the sandbar.

    A community-wide 'ice bucket challenge' is set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in Beaufort. Event planning got underway when a Port Royal restaurant, Fat Patties challenged several other local businesses to dump buckets of ice water on themselves, donating money to ALS. Main Street Beaufort then organized the event, inviting any business or individual who would like to take the challenge, to come out.

Among the children was a brand new principal who smiled and high-fived the pupils. Senfronia Smith is the new principal at St. Helena Elementary. From the bus steps, to the classroom, Smith oversaw Monday morning’s routine at the school.

    In a Beaufort community where drugs and gangs once thrived, a nonprofit called VIP Hope continues their crusade to clean up the streets and take back pride in their neighborhood. The group held a celebration on Saturday in the Bent Pine Mobile Home Community. They gave out school supplies and a free meal to those in attendance, but also sent the message to keep a lookout for one another.

    A Bluffton man is under arrest after police say he had sexual contact with a seven year old child.Patrick Kevin Vanhorn, 45, was arrested Friday afternoon after Bluffton Police executed a search warrant at his Gardners Circle home.Bluffton Police say the alleged victim's parents reported the incident on Wednesday.Vanhorn was arrested without incident, police said.The investigation is still ongoing and they ask anyone with information to call Det.     School buses are preparing to roll out on their Beaufort County routes next week, with a few changes for the upcoming school year. The Beaufort County School District and a bus provider, Durham School Services, are trying to make rides safer for kids and more convenient for parents with added technology. Each bus will be tracked using a Zonar 2010 GPS system that sends information back to bus headquarters.

    A speeding school bus has a parent in the Lowcountry fearing for her kids' lives. The speed limit on Friendship Lane on Lady's Island is 25 mph, but Tanayia LaPointe says one bus comes by her front yard going at least 45. Her front yard also happens to be the neighborhood bus stop, just feet away from the street. Her sign that reads "Hit my kid, you won't need a lawyer" is one way she's taking the situation into her own hands.

    Tanayia LaPointe fears for the safety of her children when a school speeds down the street in front of her house every morning. The bench in her yard, just feet away from the road is the neighborhood bus stop. Taking matters into her own hands, she posted a homemade sign that reads "Hit my kid, you won't need a lawyer". Now she wants something done to stop this from threatening her kids' safety.
