NEW YORK (AP) - Mike Minor took a two-hit shutout into the eighth inning after hitting a double and single himself, leading the Atlanta Braves over the New York Mets 6-1 Thursday night. Minor had an RBI single in the second for the game's first run, then doubled and scored in the eighth.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - T.J. Yates made a strong case to be Atlanta's backup quarterback Thursday night, throwing for 243 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in both teams' preseason finale. Yates completed 15 of 20 passes and was sacked twice.

(AP) - Tony Stewart will return to Sprint Cup competition Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, ending a three-race hiatus after his car struck and killed a fellow driver during a dirt-track race. The three-time NASCAR champion has not raced since Aug. 9, when he hit Kevin Ward Jr. at a sprint car event in upstate New York.

ATLANTA (AP) - Bo Wallace threw four touchdowns passes in a sloppy season opener, and Mississippi pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Boise State 35-13 Thursday night. Shaking off Wallace's three first-half interceptions, the Rebels got the victory before a sparse crowd in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.
